The Impact of Unfair Hiring Practices on Local Citizens and International Students

We frequently blame international students, thinking that their presence makes it harder for local citizens to get jobs. However, this is only part of the picture; the real problem starts with the hiring system, which doesn’t follow fair and ethical practices.

International students are often accused of taking low-wage jobs and outcompeting local residents. But the truth is, they have no choice. Life as an international student is very challenging—they have to manage tuition fees, rent, food, and other expenses, which makes it necessary for them to work. They know that if they lose their job, it will become extremely difficult to manage all these costs, so they often remain silent and don’t speak up about their rights.

On the other hand, kids who are born and raised in Canada have a much better understanding of their rights. They are aware of minimum wage laws, overtime, safety standards, and workers’ rights. If they feel something is wrong, they will not hesitate to raise their voices. They know that in Canada, there are legal ways to protect their rights.

The real issue lies with the behavior of hiring managers and big corporations . They often look for workers who will do the job without raising concerns. They prefer employees who won’t speak up for their rights and will quietly continue working. For them, hiring international students is easier because they know these students are less likely to challenge unfair practices, as their main focus is keeping their job and maintaining their study permit.

This makes it difficult for local kids, who know their rights, to get jobs because hiring managers don’t want workers who will question unethical practices or ask for what they deserve. The struggles our kids facing in finding a job happened because they are aware of their rights and won’t accept wrongful practices.

It’s unfair to blame international students when the real responsibility lies with hiring managers who don’t follow fair practices. Everyone deserves equal opportunities, whether they are local or international. Corporations and institutions must ensure that they follow fair hiring policies so that everyone gets a job based on their talent and skills, not based on nationality or their willingness to stay quiet on the job.

The problem isn’t with the students, it’s with the system. The hiring system needs to be fair and ethical so that everyone can have equal opportunities and enjoy their job with the knowledge that their rights are protected. It’s crucial for corporations to change their hiring standards so that both locals and international students understand and appreciate the value of fair opportunities.
